Knitting Thing

About

Welcome to my yet-unnamed Knitting Thing!

It doesn’t (yet?) provide a way to build charts from scratch, so you’ll have to first create an image in a graphics program and import it using the button below. See the About page for details.

If you’ve exported a project from another device and you want to import it on this device, copy the exported text, click the button below, and paste it in. See the About page for details.

Welcome!

First things first: This knitting app is in early development, so there are probably bugs. Export and back up your projects often.

Image Import

The biggest “missing feature” right now is a chart editor, which means you can't create a chart inside the app. That's on my to-do list, but for now, you have to create your project as an image in a graphics program. Here are some warnings about that:

  • Each pixel in your image becomes one stitch in your knitting chart. Zoom your graphics program in as far as you can, and use the pencil tool if there is one.
  • Each color in your image, no matter how similar it is to another color, is treated as a separate yarn color. That means you need to be sure anti-aliasing is disabled in the program you use to create your image, or you will have a lot more colors than you intended.

Once you’ve successfully imported an image into this app, your project will be saved on your device and listed in the “Saved Projects” tab on the home screen.

Be sure to keep your original file after you’ve imported it.

Text Export/Import

There is no real easy way yet of synchronizing a project across devices. Until there is, you have to export it as text, transmit that text to your target device (via email or pastebin or Google Drive or something), and then copy and paste that text into the knitting app on that device.

To export a project as text, go to the settings for your project, click on the “Other” tab, and click the button for exporting text. It will hopefully copy to your clipboard, and you can paste it into your email or whatever mechanism you've chosen for transmitting it to your second device.

To import that text, copy it out of your email or wherever it is, and then on the home screen of the app, click the “Import Text” tab and paste it into the area indicated.

Tip: Once your project exists on two devices, you don't have to copy it back and forth in order to keep your place. The “Other” tab in your project's options has a slider that can jump to any row in your project. To switch between devices, you can read the current row number from your most recent device and type that number into the device you want to continue working from.

Known Problems

  • The grid doesn't show up if your browser window is too wide. This is a web browser limitation which I hope to work around eventually.
